Hawthorn Spring Hiking Club

Join us for our Hawthorn Spring Hiking Club Wednesday evenings at 6:00 p.m.! We will be hiking the trails of Hawthorn Park and J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge totaling approximately 2.5 – 3 miles. It is recommended to wear footwear appropriate for spring weather and bring water from home to stay hydrated while on the trails.

Yoga in the Park
Hawthorn Park: Labyrinth

This is an all levels class that focuses on breath and postures to help align, strengthen, and develop flexibility in the body. Yoga has been shown to decrease stress, increase balance, and promote a sense of wellbeing. Start your week off right! Learn basic yoga movements to rejuvenate your mind and body with instructor, Kelly Doan. Bring a mat or blanket for yoga on the Labyrinth in Hawthorn Park.

Antique Camper Rally is coming to Fowler Park campgrounds June 10th-June 12th. Take walk through vintage campers during the open house hours Saturday, June 12th 12:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Campers will be onsite Thursday, June 10th – Saturday, June 12th. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors and experience the variety of unique and quirky recreational vehicles used in the past and present. Intro to Blacksmithing

(Ages 10-17 must be accompanied and supervised by a chaperone at all times)

Work with experienced blacksmiths to learn how to operate a blacksmith forge, understand the parts of an anvil, and the uses for various hand tools in the blacksmith shop. Each participant will shape metal using learned techniques include forging a curve, twist, point, square – octagon – round taper, cutting stock, heating techniques, and fire management. Participants must not wear synthetic clothing for this class. Personal protection equipment provided onsite. Lunch provided for this class. Participants will be standing for the majority of the day. Chairs will be provided for periods of rest. The class fee includes class materials and lunch for each participant/chaperone. No extra cost for chaperones.

Join our Rec Coordinator Tuesdays in June from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for some recreational summer fun! Every Tuesday, our Rec Coordinator will be at a different Vigo County Park with various sporting equipment for all ages. Stop by and play! All events are free and open to the public. Join the VCPRD on select dates from June to September for our Griffin Bike Park Lake Jump Events! The events will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. directly following the Pump Track Series at Griffin Bike Park and during the Griffin Bike Park Festival.

Participants will register for a one-hour timeslot and will be allowed to use the lake jump as many times as possible during that one-hour period. There is a 10 participant maximum for each timeslot. Participants MUST register ahead of time so don’t delay!

The registration fee for this event is $10 and can be paid upon arrival. The final date for registration is 4 p.m. on the last business day before the event date. Please register by calling our administrative office at 812-462-3392 or emailing our Recreational Coordinator at Rec.Coordinator@VigoCounty.IN.gov! We hope to see you there!

Note: all riders MUST wear a helmet, a life jacket, and shoes while jumping. This event is open for participants ages 5 and up. All children ages 13 and under must be supervised by an adult at all times. Social distancing is required. Masks will be required when social distancing cannot be maintained. Parking is available in the parking area directly adjacent to the boat ramp and lake jump. Parking is prohibited on the boat ramp during this event. Thanks in advance!

In 𝘕𝘰 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦, Soskin shares her life experiences as a Black woman in the United States: her time working in a World War II segregated union hall; her roles as mother, activist, singer, and legislative representative; and her current position as a ranger at the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park. 𝘕𝘰 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘞𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 is presented in partnership with the Vigo County Parks & Recreation Department to celebrate and commemorate Juneteenth. Learn more at notimetowastefilm.com. Join the VCPRD Sunday, June 20th at Fowler Park from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. where our Rec Coordinator and Natural Resource Programmer will be giving hour-long informational kayak tours of Ruble Lake! Tours will include a brief introduction to the recreational benefits of kayaking and the ecology and biology of the lake. Afterward, participants will have the opportunity to paddle around the lake by themselves while being supervised by the staff!

NOTE: There is a $10 registration fee per person for this event. Life jackets (provided by the VCPRD) are to be worn properly at ALL times when on the water. No exceptions. The VCPRD has 6 kayaks with seats for 7 individuals. Children ages 13 and under must be supervised by an adult at all times. Children under the age of 3 may ride sitting on a parent’s lap. Join the VCPRD Friday, July 16th at Hawthorn Park from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for Ice Skating in the Park! We will have a skating rink and $1 train rides courtesy of DIY Rentals. Pre-registration is highly encouraged as spots will fill up quickly! NOTE: There is a $5 fee for each participant and each participant will have 30 minutes of skate time. Ice skates will be provided as a part of your participation fee. Pioneer Days

Step back in time during our 49th annual Pioneer Days in our 19th-century log cabin village. Experience the way of life lived by pioneers of Indiana during the 1830s-1840s. There will be children’s activities, live music, hands-on activities, authentic food, vendors, historical cabins & covered bridge, demonstrations, pioneer skills presentations, and much more. Come on out to Fowler Park for Pioneer Days… Making History Fun!

Pumpkin Carving Contest

Join the VCPRD Friday, October 15th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Dogwood Shelter in Hawthorn Park for a Pumpkin Carving Contest!

Pumpkins and carving implements will be provided to participants. All participants under the age of 13 must be supervised by an adult at all times and will require parental supervision during all carving- and scooping-related activities.

Registration is required for this event and there is a $5 registration fee that can be paid upon arrival to the park.
