Bass Unlimited Family Fishing Rodeo

Join Bass Unlimited Foundation and Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department for the 3rd Annual Family Fishing Day Rodeo! Registration and fishing hours are open between 8:00am to 11:00 am at the Burkeybyle Shelter, you can come and go as you please, and you don’t need to fish the entire 4.5hrs. Last weigh-in at 11:30 a.m. Free prizes & raffle gifts for ages 15 & under begins at 12:00 p.m. You must register for this event to be eligible for the 1st place $50.00 gift certificate from Academy Sports + Outdoors Terre Haute, IN. Registration for this event is only available on site during the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

**All Adults are required to have a Fishing License**

All proceeds from this event go to support Vigo County Park Lakes and Bass Unlimited Foundation mission to: Provide resources for conservation, preservation and restoration of fish populations in public accessible waters for today’s Anglers and future generations.


Hawthorn Summer Hiking Series

Join us for our Hawthorn Summer Hiking Series starting June 23rd! We will be hiking the trails of Hawthorn Park and J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge totaling approximately 2.5 – 3 miles. Each week’s hike will have a fun new nature-based topic that we will learn about and observe while hiking the trails. Please bring water from home and take into consideration the heat and dress accordingly.

Elliott Woods & Prairie Creek Park Summer Nature Hiking Series

Join us for this summer’s Elliott Woods-Prairie Creek Park (EWPCP) Summer Nature Hiking Series! Learn about nature as we trek the trails of Elliott Woods Nature Preserve and Prairie Creek Park. Each week will have a fun new nature-based topic that will be discussed and observed throughout the hike. Please take into consideration the heat of summer and remember to water from home and to dress accordingly. The hike will cover approximately 3.5-4 miles.

Intro to Blacksmithing
May-October: 4th Saturday of the month
10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Fowler Park: Blacksmith Shop
$60/person
Ages 10 & up
Ages under 18 must be accompanied and supervised by an adult
Registration and payment required one week prior to desired class date.

Work with experienced blacksmiths to learn how to operate a blacksmith forge, understand the parts of an anvil, and the uses for various hand tools in the blacksmith shop. Each participant will shape metal using learned techniques include forging a curve, twist, point, square – octagon – round taper, cutting stock, heating techniques, and fire management. Participants must not wear synthetic clothing for this class. Personal protection equipment provided onsite. Lunch provided for this class. Participants will be standing a majority of the day. Chairs will be provided for periods of rest.

Registration and payment required at least one week prior to desired class date. Class dates include: May 23rd (class full),June 27th (class full), July 25th (class full), August 22 (class full), September 26th and October 24th.

As our pioneers prepare the village for our annual festival held in October they will be in their cabins third Saturdays of the month from June through September for Summer in the Village. This is a wonderful opportunity to meet our cabin caretakers and  tour the cabins throughout Pioneer Village.

Let’s celebrate the back to school season with a community-wide scavenger hunt! Here are the rules:

1. Each day, 3 new clues will be posted to the VCPRD Facebook and Instagram. Correct answers will be posted the following day along with 3 new clues.

2. Seekers must take a selfie with the clues at the specific park and submit the photos through Facebook messenger. All 3 daily clues will be at the same location.

3. Photos must be turned in by the end of the day on which the clue was posted.

4. The Facebook account with the most photos taken at the correct location will receive a free weekend of camping at the park of their choice (Hawthorn, Prairie Creek, or Fowler).

Step back in time during our 48th annual Pioneer Days in Fowler Park’s 19th century log cabin village. Experience the way of the life lived by Pioneers of Indiana during the 1830s-1840s. There will be children’s activities, live music, hands-on activities, authentic food, vendors, historical cabins & covered bridge, demonstrations, pioneer skills presentations, muzzleloader camp, and much more. Come on out to Fowler Park for Pioneer Days…Making History Fun!

Join the VCPRD at the Fowler Park Pioneer Village for Fowler Park After Dark! This is the perfect event for every family. From 4 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., families can enjoy an un-haunted hayride tour of the village with a “spooky” history lesson of the village, decorations, and “scares” that are appropriate for a younger crowd. After 6:30 p.m., the park turns into a haunted hayride extraordinaire! Riders will listen to a spooky re-telling of the history of the village. Watch out, though! Ghosts and goblins lurk around every corner. Riders beware!
