Step back in time during our 47th annual Pioneer Days in Fowler Park’s 19th century log cabin village. Experience the way of the life lived by Pioneers of Indiana during the 1830s-1840s. There will be children’s activities, live music, hands-on activities, authentic food, vendors, historical cabins & covered bridge, demonstrations, pioneer skills presentations, muzzleloader camp, and much more. Come on out to Fowler Park for Pioneer Days…Making History Fun!

Volunteer, crafter & vendor applications are available online at www.vigoparks.org starting Friday, August 23, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. Applications will also we available at the Fowler Park Gatehouse or our Administrative Office in the Vigo County Annex Building located at 155 Oak St., Terre Haute, IN 47807. Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and a fun way to reduce stress and rid yourself of the winter blahs. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit. Each hike will bring new discoveries along the trail system throughout Hawthorn Park. Trail level of difficulty is beginner to moderate with some hilly spots along the way. Hikers are encouraged to download the apps “Map My Hike” and “iNaturalist”.

Join in on the fun the Elliott Woods Hiking Club Thursday morning hikes! Hiking is the ultimate way to enjoy the outdoors and a fun way to reduce stress and rid yourself of the winter blahs. Regardless of the intensity level, it is a great way to burn calories and stay fit. Hike up to 4 miles with our Natural Resource Programmer in beautiful Elliott Woods Nature Preserve and around Prairie Creek Park. Each hike will bring new discoveries through the season. Hikers will have the option to hike 2 miles or 4 miles. Trail level of difficulty is moderate and hilly. Hikers are encouraged to download the apps “Map My Hike” and “iNaturalist”.

Calling all gardeners, outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs and knowledge seekers! We are seeking volunteers interested in helping us revitalize the gardens and native plantings throughout Fowler Park’s Pioneer Village. Join us as we strive to bring history to life one seed at a time and for an opportunity to learn about, discuss, design and create gardens similar to those of the pioneer era. Bring your family, friends, blankets and chairs and join us for Vigo County Parks & Recreation Department’s Movie in the Park summer series with DeeJay Danny Wayne! Movies in the Park films include: Homeward Bound the Incredible Journey (June 21), Angles in the Outfield (July 19), Richie Rich (August 16), and Little Giants (September 20). Activities begin at 7:00 p.m. Movie starts at sundown (times will vary). Popcorn, candy, drinks & glow bracelets will be available for purchase. All proceeds go to Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department.


Intro to Blacksmithing

Fowler Park: Pioneer Village-Blacksmith Shop
Ages 13+ (Parental Supervision is Required for Ages 18 & Under)

This class will fill up quickly!

Work with experienced blacksmiths to learn how to operate a blacksmith forge, understand the parts of an anvil, and the uses for various hand tools in the blacksmith shop. Each participant will shape metal by making an “s” hook from ¼” bar stock. Techniques include forging a curve, twist, point, square – octagon – round taper, cutting stock, heating techniques, and fire management. Participants must not wear synthetic clothing for this class. Personal protection equipment provided onsite. Lunch provided for this class including Subway sandwiches & bottled water. Participants will be standing a majority of the day. Chairs will be provided for periods of rest.

Wabashiki Full Moon/Night Ride

$5/person (cash only please)

Bike the Wabashiki Trail with our Griffin Bike Park Manager and VCPRD Natural Resource Programmer on an adventurous 10-mile fundraising ride through the river bottoms. Hybrids and mountain bikes are recommended, helmets are required. Clear-lensed glasses suggested. Adult supervision is required for ages 13 and under. Bring a bike light or headlamp to light the trail. Snacks and water provided while supplies last. Payment will be $5 accepted on site with cash only, please.

Join us for “Summer in the Village” as our Pioneers open up their cabins for all to explore and demonstrate early 19th century skills and crafts for the public to experience. We are always looking for new volunteers to join us in Pioneer Village! Summer in the Village is a great opportunity to talk with current volunteers and check out the different skills and activities you might like to learn and join in on. Griffin Bike Park Festival

Come celebrate friendship, family, freedom, and community with the Griffin Bike Park. Free guided and non-guided rides will happen throughout the weekend. Friday will kick off with the spectator friendly Dual Slalom qualifying rounds. Saturday morning will be the finals of the Big Money Dual Slalom race. Saturday will also be the inaugural race of the Indiana Interscholastic MTB League Cross Country races. Then finish the day with a cool off on the Griffin Bike Park Lake Jump and Floating Trail. Sunday will feature a grueling Cross Country race with categories for all skill levels and ages. Children’s activities will be available throughout the weekend. Christmas Walk

Walk through the village and visit our pioneer volunteers in their cozy 19th century cabins. For a small fee, enjoy carriage rides, crafts, hot drinks, and sweet treats. Stop into our Gift Shop for many homemade items.
